I have a quality ten year old auto darkening welding helmet, but its shading is not adjustable. It darkens to a #10 shade only. Lately I have noticed I am having more difficulty seeing what I weld, even though I put fresh batteries in the helmet. I am 67 years old. Eyesight dims a bit with age. I bought this #9 lens to try in an extra basic helmet. I can see much better when using a flux core wire feed welder while using the #9 lens.I weld at home in my garage. I am not a professional and do not weld all day. I cannot say if my eyes would show extra fatigue after a whole day of welding with this. I have never welded all day.
Buying this lens may be enough for using my wire feed welder, or it may be an inexpensive experiment to determine whether I want to spend the money for a new adjustable auto-darkening welding helmet from a name brand maker. I will need to experiment with this fixed #9 lens when welding with my wire feed welder. Usually I can rest the end of the wire where I want to begin welding while I bring the helmet down in front of my face, so it is not essential that I see while the arc begins. But, it also takes me a second or two to locate the joint seam and gain full control after the arc begins. Weaving the bead a little rather than just drawing the gun in a straight line helps, too.
