Shock Doctor Black Wrist Sleeve-Wrap Support (Left, X-Large) Review

I have the three-strap version of this wrist support (model 824) and have used it for over a year now, to relieve wrist pain that I believe has resulted from using the computer and mouse for long durations throughout the day (and probably not following sufficiently good posture as well as not taking sufficient breaks...).

The 824 model is essentially identical to the 822 model shown on this page, with two additional straps (you can see them in the images I've posted showing the packaging for the wrist support), and the 824 has three removable plastic strips whereas the 822 has two strips. Functionally the 824 and 822 are the same, with the 824 perhaps offering some additional stability or support due to the extra straps and additional stiffening strip.

It was recommended by my doctor - not necessarily this specific model, but he told me to get a wrist support that incorporates stiff supports ('stays') to hold the wrist and prevent it from bending while sleeping. I had some difficulty in finding this support, looking at sports stores locally until I finally found a store that carried this product which was the only one I could find that looked like what he was suggesting.

This wrist support incorporates two thin plastic strips, shaped kind of like short emery boards, that fit into slots on the top of the support and serve to hold your wrist straight and prevent it from flexing. You can remove them or keep all three in place depending upon how much support you desire. I simply keep all three in place. You can see them in the scan of the instructions that I've posted on this page.

The package claims a "comfortable micro-fiber synthetic leather palm" and it does work well and is comfortable.

While it has not totally eliminated the occurrence of wrist pain for me personally, it does relieve the pain and support the wrist overnight, so that when I sleep it is not bothersome, and when I wake up I am pain free. I do not use it during the day but if the problem becomes more severe for me then I may begin to do that, in which case I'm sure I would reduce the likelihood of developing pain when I spend a long time on the computer.

After one year of using this support every night, the velcro is getting kind of ragged from strapping it on each night and then removing it in the morning. For that reason I'll probably replace it eventually. At this point, functionally it is still fine.
