These N95 masks suit the flu protection purpose in a limited but practical sense. The following is my experience and a summary of my research.

When Swine Flu emerged, I could not get surgical or respirator masks. All stores sold out before I got there. Online prices were at incredible premiums at the time but have since come down a lot. I bought this box of 20 3M 8200 N95 Particulate Disposable Respirators. 3M is a very reputable company and this is one of the better ones. They're well made and with the double band, they fit snugly and that is the key to being effective.

The 3M 8200 N95 Particulate Disposable Respirator - the "N95" means that if the mask is properly fitted, it will filter out particles down to .3 microns 95 percent of the time. That's great for particulate matter but not sufficient against flu bugs - yet quite helpful.

The types of viruses that cause respiratory illnesses measure between .1 to .2 microns. That means that while this mask will probably stop most of the flu viruses from getting through, it is not dense enough to stop them all. They should help when you're using public transportation, for example, and this mask might be your savior if somebody with Swine Flu is coughing. I think those of us with children are especially worried about bringing home this virus.
