The tendons at the base of my left thumb are inflamed due to a nasty fall I took during the summer. An MRI confirmed the diagnosis of DeQuervains Tenosynovitis. My doctor gave me a cortisone shot in my wrist and slipped this brace on my hand. It goes halfway up my forearm and totally immobilizes my wrist and thumb. There are stainless steel strips in slots that run the length of the brace on the thumb side and on the bottom. The bottom strip is wider and contoured so it cups the heel of my hand. The strips reside in pockets and are not visible. It is lined with green comfort foam. My other four fingers are free. If you must wear a brace, this one is very comfortable...no sharp edges and my hand is securely fastened so there is no chafing. It is lightweight too. I just wish it was beige instead of black which is why I gave it four stars.
