My ears are susceptible to infection, and loud noises, even if they are lower volume than the OSHA limit of 8f dBA. The best long term solution to preventing ear infections is two-fold. 1) Keep water out of your ears, and 2) create an acidci environment because the fungus that causes ear infections needs water and can't live in a acidic environment. I use vineager to create the acidic environment, and it helps.I have the most problem with water in my ears when I shower. I've tried silicone earplugs, but they eventually get dirty and stop working, plus can transfer infections from one ear to the other. The next try was cotton balls covered with petroleum jelly. Its effective, but messy and time consuming to prepare and clean up.
I found these earplugs in a CVS pharmacy, and tried them in the shower. I'm a big guy, and unfotunately, they kept falling out, so I stopped using them, and went back to cotton balls and petroleum jelly.
My wife loves to drag me to a cheap club with cinder block walls and loud bands. Just walking through the club without protection one night caused my ears to ring.
That's a clear sign of hearing damage.
I've tried other, foam, earplugs, but the disposable ones eventually stop working, and they take a few tries to get correctly inserted. With these plugs, I just pull my earlobe down and push it in. They make the room noise almost tolerable. The highest dBA rating custom fit earplugs I can find are also 25 dBA, so I'm OK with using these.
I am also a wing nut. I have some active noise canceling headsets, and like to wear these as well, for some extra protection. I have to turn the volume on the radio up a bit to compensate, but that's better than having the engine roaring in my ears for the whole flight.
Finally, my ears used to ring when I came out of my gym after a workout. Now, I wear these, and they don't ring from the noise in the gym. In fact, once I start working out, I can hear the blood pounding in my ears.
One caveat. They seem to have stretched my ears. I have a pair of 15 dBA custom fitted earplugs, but they don't seem to be attenuating the sound as well as they used to. The only explanation is the sound is getting between them and the ear canal.
I tried Howard Leight's ultimate foam earplugs, and I can't tell much difference between them being in and out, so I think my ears have stretched because of the Hearos.
